Free help you're not using: APEX Accelerators and SBDC counselors
There's a free, experienced workforce dedicated to helping small businesses win government contracts, and most small contractors never use it. APEX Accelerators and SBDC counselors exist for exactly your situation — they're funded to advise you, they don't charge for it, and the smartest firms treat them as a permanent part of their bid team.
APEX Accelerators
APEX Accelerators — the network formerly known as PTACs, Procurement Technical Assistance Centers — are local offices funded through the Department of Defense's Office of Small Business Programs and hosted by state and local organizations. Their job is to help businesses compete for government contracts: getting registered in SAM.gov, building a capability statement, understanding a solicitation, and reviewing a proposal before it goes out. There are offices across the country, and their services are free.
SBDC counselors
Small Business Development Centers are the SBA's nationwide network, hosted by universities and state economic development agencies. Their counselors advise on the business side of contracting — pricing a proposal, reading a financial statement, managing cash flow while you wait to be paid, deciding which certifications are worth pursuing. Like APEX, they're free and confidential, and their whole incentive is your success, because their funding and reputation ride on it.
Why counselors plus tooling wins
Here's the honest division of labor. A counselor brings judgment accumulated over hundreds of bids: what agencies actually reward, where a price is likely too low, which opportunities are traps. What a counselor can't do is refresh the portals every morning or draft twenty proposals a month — that's hours of routine work no human should spend on.
That's the partnership BidMast was built for. The For Counselors page explains how counselors use BidMast with their clients: live SAM.gov matching on every signed-in plan, Pro proposal drafts assembled from the contractor's own material, and collaboration rooms where the counselor, the owner, and the team work a bid from first look to submission. The tooling handles the watching and the first draft; the counselor brings the judgment that turns a draft into a win. The community board is where that whole group stays connected between bids.
Start this week
Find the APEX Accelerator or SBDC nearest you — most are one call or one web form away — and bring them one specific question: "Which of my certifications is worth pursuing, and what should my NAICS codes be?" Then build your contractor profile and start watching live opportunities. You'll be surprised how quickly free advice plus good tooling turns into your first submitted bid — and your first award.
New to BidMast? Sign up free and bring your counselor into a room to work your first bid together.
